Braves Varsity Team Win Blue Jackets Cup Championship!
The Olentangy Braves Varsity team captured the Blue Jackets Cup for the first time in the Club's history on Sunday by defeating the second seeded Athens Bobcats 3 to 1. The Braves completed a perfect run through the tournament defeating the number 1, 2 and 3 seeds in convincing fashion. The entire team contributed to the success this weekend but there were a few highlights that stand out for me. In the opening game of the tournament versus Westerville, Conner Laughlin scored the game winning goal on a great individual unassisted breakaway. Later in that game, Max Motter scored one of the nicest goals of the season when he sniped Westerville's goalie on a beautiful pass by Cody Holbrook. In the game versus PRPC the next night, the penalty kill was a perfect 8 for 8 against the regular season champs. There were many people who contributed to that, but the defense stood out as they seemed to get to every loose puck and rebound. In the next game, down 0-3 to Newark and playing short-handed, Shawn Wright stole the puck, broke free from 2 defenders and beat the goalie clean. This created a huge momentum swing that led to a rally of 5 straight goals and a great comeback victory. Later in that game, Clayton Anderson volunteered to give up his skates after Christian had broken his skate blade. Christian scored a goal later wearing Clayton's skates. Even though it is not on the score sheet, Clayton gets a big assist on that one! In the championship game, Ryan Herrmann was a man on a mission. Ryan scored the first two goals of the game, including the game winner. Lastly, Johnny Panovsky exerted his leadership of the team throughout the tournament by setting a great example for others to follow and continually encouraging his teammates. The Braves ended the tournament with some impressive statistics. Ryan Herrmann led the tournament with 6 goals in 4 games. Ryan and Christian Pereira lead the tournament with 2 power play goals each. Christian also led the tournament in points with 9 and assists with 7. Conner Laughlin lead the tournament with 2 game winning goals. Luke Highley was impressive all tournament. He stopped 109 out of 116 shots for a gouty save percentage of .939 which was second in the tournament. Luke faced the most shots and made the most save of any goalie in the tournament. Luke gave up just 7 goals in 4 games for a 1.75 goals against average which was the 3rd best in the tournament. The Braves now prepare for the State Championship Tournament on March 8th in Strongsville. We are proud of what you have accomplished so far but there is still more work to do. Good luck at States and bring back a championship!
